It was an absolute pleasure working with Ken Burghardt and the team at Domicile Design. Ken was knowledgeable and respectful of our design wishes and at the same time willing to offer valuable ideas that enhanced the design. They met all our deadlines, kept to the committed budget, and were always available to answer questions or provide assistance with other facets of the project. Ken always made us feel like we were his number one priority.
I cannot imagine building a kitchen without Ken Burghardt at Domicile. Our working relationship started in 1980 with my first home, a 1905 working class Victorian San Francisco flat. During the evolution that became Domicile, we conspired on 2 more SF homes and several rental units. The results always exceded my expectations. Ken consistently found and developed the attributes (often hidden and subtle) of our projects. Critically important, he never lost site of my budget – once building an entire kitchen from a retired showroom display.
My family moved to Boulder, CO and bought a “spec” home – my only truly new house – and suffered for several years with a barely workable kitchen. Ken was imported and spent a few days observing my family’s movements and gridlocks. The budget was much bigger, the obstacles daunting and the results were stunning! He incorporated our love of stained glass with an essential mother-in-law perch into a kitchen and breakfast nook that was a pleasure for family meals as well as a house full of revelers. The housing market was crap when we needed to sell and that kitchen sold it for us (and for the next owners, 5 years later).
The empty-nester challenge was a 1967 split level. My best move was designing the remodel around Ken’s kitchen. He also provided much of our master bath and entertainment area. So, it’s not just kitchens anymore. The new home is a gem and jaws regularly drop. I give Domicile 5 stars – many times over. In all fairness, I must disclose that working with Ken is great fun.
Ken Burghardt started my remodel with a kitchen and wound up running a total house remodel, which included two kitchens, three bathrooms and 4500 square feet of construction. He was a god sent to this overwhelming process. He kept me grounded and the job on track. There was also about 10,000 square feet of tile work as well. All his recommended sub contractors were expert and professional. I rank him five stars when you think of remodeling or redesigning space.
I am delighted to write this review for Domicile Designs San Francisco. Ken Burghardt has a combination of great sense of timeless design combined with extensive knowledge on current products in the market for the home. He designed our kitchen and dining area. Ken answered our multiple questions with humor, grace and action. With his experience issues were solved once and completely.
Ron Sasina also offered us advice and help in the project. My husband and I enjoyed our interactions with Ken and Ron and we are so, so grateful for their involvement, knowledge and patience. Go no where else!
The service I received was for kitchen design. I was very impressed with the extensive knowledge of Ken and Ron on all things that it takes to remodel a kitchen. Any remodel job, especially a kitchen, is mind blowing. It gave me piece of mind to work with someone who could help in the decision making process with great results. I would highly recommend Domicile Designs to family and friends.
As an Interior Design professional in the Bay area I have worked with Ken for many years on multiple projects from La Jolla to Belvedere. He has a current and extensive knowledge base of a broad range of the best and most appropriate kitchen and bath products, a masterful eye for creative and interesting installation techniques and finishes, as well as a cadre of the best and most talented installers in the San Francisco Bay area. Ken is knowledgeable, creative, reliable, and a joy to work with.
Many clients and this designer appreciate his expertise, great design, good humor, and amazingly workable environments.
Ken has amazing vision. We consulted with him just as we were ready to start a project with a design/build firm. He saved us from throwing a lot of money away on a small kitchen remodel that wouldn’t have done anything but change our appliances. His vision was to transform the heart of the house into something spectacular, and fix a major architectural design flaw. What we got out of our collaboration with Domicile was wise use of our money and maximization of space all with professional guidance. Lastly, Ken is a delightful person and you will most likely try to find other projects to do with him.
Love Ken! He was so patient (and continues to be) as we built the kitchen of our dreams, in the budget of our reality. And our retro mid-century sensibilities. There were many times when a lesser man might have lost his patience, but Ken never came close. He had a bunch of top notch people to refer us to for things we needed – like our amazing cement counters. He always had an answer for us, and if he didn’t, he told us to give him a minute to find out. Loved his honesty and openness. He continues to help us fine tune our kitchen months after construction has finished.
I worked with Domicile to do a major kitchen renovation. (Now they are beginning work on my Master Bath renovation!). We worked with Ken, who is extremely knowledgeable, not just about layout and flow, but also about design elements and is a wealth of information about the sourcing options in the Bay Area. (Being from the east coast originally, I found this extremely helpful). He goes out of his way to ensure his customers are happy and we have a lot of fun in the process. In addition, the contractor he recommended was excellent – meticulous and reasonably priced. I was very happy with how my kitchen turned out, which is why I am a returning customer for my Master Bath.
Ken and Ron were a pleasure to work with. They were the ultimate professionals, listening to our ideas and needs, creative and adaptable in their suggestions, easily available. For my wife and I who had no experience remodeling a kitchen, Ken and Ron guided us smoothly through a very complex process. We are so pleased with the results. They are to thank for that. We would recommend Domicile without hesitation for any remodeling project you might have.
I have had the privilege of working with Ken Burghardt of Domicile in 2008 on the complete remodel of our home in Lafayette. This was a year long, down to the studs remodel. During the entire year, Ken provided knowledgable guidance on materials, sequencing events, refining product choices as well as introducing us to fabulous designs. Ken’s breadth of knowledge on detailed designs of cabinetry, tile, granite, fixtures, lighting and “creature comfort” design made me look forward to creating the project. His ability to work well with all subcontractors helped us to avoid confrontation and to find compromise and resolution every step.
The Team at Domicile SF is wonderful to work with. I have hired them for at least 10 projects over a number of years. Each project presented a challenge and hiccups came in from left field, which Ken and his team took on with great professionalism and creativity. My clients were thrilled with the end results and I was relieved of not having to micro manage. They make me look like a star. …and for that they get 5 stars!
I can’t say enough good things about my overall experience of working with Ken. I didn’t have many specifics for my “dream kitchen”, just an overall vision, and Ken figured it all out to the last detail. It only took a few conversations and showroom visits (i’m not a real detail person) before Ken was able to put together a beautiful kitchen, from the gorgeous cabinetry right down to appliances and fixtures. Ken was highly knowledgable, experienced, and had a great attitude, as well as a sense of humor. I truly enjoyed working with him . My kitchen continues to get rave reviews to this day!
Ken Burghardt is a pleasure to work with. He understands the need for quality, but equally understands the need for a price that can make my projects profitable. If only all my suppliers could be as responsive, helpful and smart as Ken — my job would be a breeze (I’m a developer). Can’t speak highly enough. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with his partner, Ron Sasina — also a top flight guy. Domicile SF gets a big thumbs up from me.
Hiring Ken Burghardt to help us redesign our kitchen was the best decision we could have possibly made. Whenever we’re giving a tour of our kitchen, we always credit him for his great suggestions and solutions about the layout and functionality. Adding French doors to connect the kitchen to the yard was something we hadn’t considered but it was the key to making the space more enjoyable. I would not hesitate for a minute to hire Ken for another project or recommend him to friends, some of whom have also hired him and loved working with him as much as we did.
Very knowledgeable about product, creative in design and problem solving. Witty, charming personality, ethical and a delight to work with. There isn’t anyone in the area that can compete with his knowledge and talents on a project. Just simply a fine person! We have worked together on and off for the last 15 plus years.
I’ve been working with Ken and his staff for coming up on 15 years now. Ken is the definition of professional and classy. There hasn’t been a single case, in the last 15 years, where Ken hasn’t exceeded the expectations of both his clients and trade partners. Ken just gets it.
The business of remodeling or rebuilding one’s home is a stressful and emotional undertaking. Ken has a keen awareness of this and is able to work through issues that arise, whether emotional or professional, like a pro. He has a human touch that seems to be lost as the years go by, But not with Ken.
I’d highly recommend that before you decide to work with another comany you take the time to just speak with him in person. If you do you will work with Ken, For that I have no doubt.
Thank you Ken for making the projects both beautiful and fun!!
I bought a small condo in San Francisco that I wanted to update into the 21st century, and I happened to walk into Ken Burghardt’s Domicile’s beautiful showroom. I had never done a kitchen remodel before, and Ken was so incredibly patient to walk me through the entire process. He came to my place to help me re-design my kitchen and overall floor plan. What was once a very small galley kitchen is now an open floor kitchen plan (that even takes into account some vents/gas pipes we couldn’t move).
Ken was creative in his approach to making the best of the small space I had to work with. He kept working with me to finally come up with a kitchen design that worked for me and my family. And he referred me to a contractor that’s done an incredible job implementing his vision. I highly recommend working with Ken. He’s a great kitchen designer. And he’s built me a beautiful kitchen that my friends keep complimenting.
Ken and I have worked together on many projects and I have a great deal of respect for his professionalism, integrity and a rare talent for design invovation. He is the person I call for cabinetry, kitchen design, and collaboration in our chosen field of interior design.
